Bringing the Gold
(Business, Jobs, Education, Sustainable Ecosystem, Quality of Life)
Back to the Golden State of California

Work Worth Doing

Nadine North pictureIn May 2010, I was invited to attend the Bay Area Council's Annual Outlook Conference, held in Silicon Valley. With a number of impressive thought-leaders as speakers, including our Governor; experts in National economic trends; Global clean tech initiatives; and Bay Area business development, it appeared to be a good 1-day investment.

When CEO Jim Wunderman took to the dais to discuss the state of our State of California, I knew I had found a fantastic organization. He spoke about California Business Leadership – business executives taking the lead to insist that California take back the mantle of the best place for business, jobs, education, and general quality of life.

"Your roads, bridges, and schools, along with your water-infrastructure, economy, and credit rating, simply don't go from first-to-worst in the nation unless something is deeply flawed... First, we need to get the business community of our state aligned. I call on the leaders inside this room, and the business leaders outside it, to unite in one voice. We will develop one common agenda. It is time to stop only playing defense. It is time to start building. It is time to invest and time to compromise for our state's common good. It is time to repair our dysfunctional government. It is time to fix our roads, to prepare for the earthquakes sure to come, to fix our water systems and to fix our schools.

This is not a time to hide … this is a time to lead.

There is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character than giving our all to a difficult task. This is the price and the promise of business leadership in California. Ronald Reagan said, "You and I are told increasingly that we have to choose between a left or right, but I would like to suggest that there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down."

"Our state needs us, let's not let her down."

With this call to action, I've joined the Bay Area Council as a Senior Strategic Advisor. (www.bayareacouncil.org)

California business leaders, please join me and the Bay Area Council in "Work Worth Doing".

I’m proud to announce the establishment of Six Degree West – and alliance with Six Degree People UK – which I believe to be the top executive search firm specializing in sustainable business and talent development.

Since 1997 when they completed their first board-level sustainability leadership assignment – Six Degree People UK dedicated their good work to environmental and organizational sustainability in Europe long before we “got it” in the U.S. They have built a compelling global network of expert practitioners and recognized thought leaders, and are now engaged in some of the most strategically significant searches for many of the world’s largest and businesses and organizations.

After several conversations in which we realized we shared a vision for excellence in environmental executive search, we are merging The North Point’s environmental strategy practice with SDP, and I am now leading Six Degree West’s North America operations.

SDP clients know they must fully integrate talent development and sustainability into their strategy and operations. This is to gain emerging market advantages while managing potential liabilities.

We work with companies to unlock existing – and identify new -- talent required to realign their business model with the new energy economy. We focus on identifying current and emerging commercially experienced leaders who have already delivered success in low carbon innovation. These are leaders who use their skills to shape organizations in sync with stakeholders who demand far more transparency and authenticity than ever before.

By uniquely building relationships on both the demand and supply side we ensure a 360° view of the market which is invaluable whether your organization seeks a key leadership appointment, to identify acquisitions or to truly understand what business-critical, low carbon services your potential client base will be procuring in the next financial year and beyond.

Thus, sustainability is no longer simply an environmental issue. It now impacts every aspect of our fundamental organizations -- economic, social and cultural.

Six Degree West, along with SDP UK, offers three core services:

Executive Search

Acquisition Identification & Brokerage

Business Intelligence Reporting

Here are some of our on-going initiatives:
